Education is one of the most important and focused ways we help change the way the world hears. We are actively involved in educational initiatives on several fronts. The urgency of this focus can not be overemphasized! Why? Because early intervention is critically important! The auditory (hearing) system develops early – beginning when the baby is still in the womb. Most of the development is completed by the time the child enters kindergarten! Children need to learn to listen during the critical development period, because beyond this time-frame they must “listen to learn”.
Our educational initiatives are global, but we start locally:
- We work to ensure that area hospitals have updated information to provide to families when babies fail the newborn hearing screening test.
- Each year we train hundreds of school professionals who work with deaf/hard of hearing students. Previous in-service topics have included: auditory training and speech-language therapy updates, new technology primers, hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems, implant candidacy, social/emotional impact of hearing loss, curriculum design, and trends in educational services for children with cochlear implants. For information, or to schedule an in-service training event for your school district, please e-mail Joy Murdock, Training Center Coordinator (jmurdock@letthemhear.org).
- We are the West Coast location for the nation’s premier advanced training for Deaf Educators. The Educational Consultant Training Program is a six-week intensive program which offers specialized graduate-level training by national cochlear implant experts. The training combines classroom lectures, seminars and distance learning with practical training in a top cochlear implant center and various educational settings (http://www.chop.edu/ectp).

- In addition to our Fellowship Training Program for physicians, we provide on-site internship opportunities to graduate-level speech-language pathologists and audiologists in the specialized area of cochlear implants.
- Bi-annually, we host the largest Cochlear Implant Conference in Northern California -- a teaching and training opportunity for doctors, nurses, audiologists, deaf educators, public school professionals, speech language pathologists, and industry leaders – where we share “state of the art” medical and educational interventions. We are firmly committed to improve the services provided to children with hearing impairment/cochlear implants.
- Internationally, we train surgeons and audiologists in and from foreign countries as we launch new cochlear implant centers around the world.
- We work diligently to educate our patient’s and their families, ensuring that they are able to obtain the most accurate and current information. We are in the process of establishing a Parent/Patient Support Group.
- Starting in the Fall of 2006 we will be offering a monthly Professional Forum to discuss “hot topics” related to cochlear implants.
Education is a huge part of our effort to change the way the world hears!
